For each, there will be four sources. There is usually at least one visual source but most are generally from historians.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-pale-cyan-blue-background-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"paper1\"><strong>How to answer Paper I questions<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Only attempt ONE case study for this paper. Some students panic and answer two!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You MUST answer all four questions. Ensure you develop a plan to answer all the questions in the time allotted. Two strategies are listed below. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Remember that you have FIVE MINUTES reading time prior to starting the paper.  Use this to read the first question and the relevant source. Under pressure, occasionally students make the error of analysing the wrong source. Therefore, use the five minutes to prevent this. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-light-green-cyan-background-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"A\"><strong>Strategy A<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Q1a &#8211; 7.5 minutes<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Q1b &#8211; 5 minutes<br>Q2 &#8211; 10 minutes<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Q3 &#8211; 15 minutes<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Q4 &#8211; 22.5 minutes<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Total &#8211; 60 minutes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-light-green-cyan-background-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"B\"><strong>Strategy B <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Q1a &#8211; 6 minutes<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Q1b &#8211; 4 minutes<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Q2 &#8211; 8 minutes<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Q3 &#8211; 12 minutes<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Q4 &#8211; 18 minutes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Total &#8211; 48 minutes, leaving 12 to plan and allow more time for the more difficult questions.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is advisable to write the time you finish next to each question before you start the paper. For example, if you start at 1400, write 1406 next to question 1a. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-very-dark-gray-color has-pale-cyan-blue-background-color has-text-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"1a\"><strong>Q1a<\/strong>&nbsp;(3 marks) <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Make three points and support with evidence. Try to infer from the source too. Advice is to use <strong>firstly, secondly and thirdly.<\/strong> This question is worth three marks. You need to list three bullet points and briefly include the supporting evidence. Ensure your point is not the same language as the supporting evidence (which should be a <strong>direct quote<\/strong> but not a full sentence).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-pale-cyan-blue-background-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"1b\"><strong>Q1b&nbsp;<\/strong>(2 marks) <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Make <strong>two different points<\/strong> and support with evidence from the source. Use &#8216;<strong>one message is<\/strong>&#8230;because the source says that&#8217; and the &#8216;<strong>second message<\/strong> is&#8230;because the source says that&#8217;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-pale-cyan-blue-background-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"2\"><strong>Q2<\/strong>&nbsp;(4 marks) <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How does the origin, purpose and content of the source affect the <strong>value<\/strong> and<strong> limitations<\/strong> a historian puts on it? How useful is it? You can use contextual knowledge here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When identifying the Origin, Purpose and Content of a source, ensure you link this to the reliability of it. Explain how it is a value or a limitation. Who is it valuable to and why\/how? You could do this in two paragraphs, values and limitations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Structure<\/em> &#8211; Make sure you use the words <strong>Origin<\/strong>, <strong>Purpose<\/strong>, <strong>Content<\/strong>, <strong>Value<\/strong> and<strong> Limitation<\/strong>. This makes it obvious to the examiner! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>origin<\/strong> of source A is\u2026From this we can deduce that its <strong>purpose<\/strong> which could be\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Therefore, the source is <strong>valuable<\/strong> because\u2026For example, in terms of its <strong>content<\/strong>, it \u2026 (focus on facts provided and attitudes revealed)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nevertheless, it also has some <strong>limitations<\/strong> in the sense that\u2026For example, in terms of its <strong>content<\/strong>, it\u2026 (focus on factual omissions and unfair prejudices)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-pale-cyan-blue-background-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"3\"><strong>Q3<\/strong>&nbsp;(6 marks) <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Compare and contrast two sources. What is <strong>similar<\/strong> and what is <strong>different<\/strong>? Identify <strong>both<\/strong>. Use words such as whilst, however, whereas, similarly, yet et cetera. Quote the source but only briefly. It is important to <strong>link your analysis to the topic<\/strong> of the question, not just identify the similarities and differences. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Do:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Use words such as: <strong>whereas<\/strong>, on the other hand, similarly, the sources agree\/ disagree in\/with&#8230;For example, Source K states that&#8230;whereas Source K disagrees and states that&#8230;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Aim to make at least <strong>two<\/strong> similarities and differences. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make it explicit <strong>which source<\/strong> you are analysing, e.g. Japan&#8217;s intention to create a Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere (source K) differs from its announcements that it was acting to defend itself from the western imperialists (source M). <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Do not:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Explain or critically analyse <strong>one source<\/strong> by itself.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Describe<\/strong> the sources<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Write an essay<\/strong> with an introduction and conclusion.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Discuss <strong>why <\/strong>the source is similar or different. Focus on <strong>how<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>List<\/strong> the similarities and differences, avoid bullet points. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A simple structure is to write <strong>two paragraphs<\/strong>, one for similarities and one for differences. Aim for about <strong>three<\/strong> analytical points in each. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-pale-cyan-blue-background-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"4\"><strong>Q4<\/strong>&nbsp;(9 marks) <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is a mini-essay. This is where you include both your <strong>knowledge<\/strong> and analyses of sources. <strong>Use all the sources<\/strong>, referring to them as \u2018Source B states\/ explains\u2019 that\u2026Ensure that they are used to <strong>support an argument or perspective<\/strong> you are developing. They should be embedded in the analysis and not appear as an add-on. Furthermore, it is useful to include the <strong>historiography<\/strong> or the <strong>controversy<\/strong> of the topic. This shows a higher level of understanding. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As with all essays, include,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Introduction<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Thesis Statement<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Aim for five paragraphs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>One or two paragraphs should focus on one interpretation of the answer. The other should focus on a different interpretation. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>And make sure your essay reaches a conclusion which answers the question. Try to identify the <strong>ONE<\/strong> source that answers the question more than the others. This demonstrates your understanding. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is advisable to develop a brief essay outline before you begin.
