From the Elementary Principal
By Simon Millward, Elementary School Principal
Although this week was a four day week there was a lot that was packed into it. We got off to a great start as we hosted the ES assembly in the theatre for the first time this year. Students were spaced two seats apart, with masks on and they hand sanitised before and after the assembly. A big congratulations to Téa and Finn for being risk-takers and being the MC’s for the day. The assembly was full of great sharing and included grade 1 sharing their learning in design all about simple machines, Grade 2 shared their PE explorations in net games, a Grade 3 Science experiment as well as contributions from Grade 5 Spanish and Chinese as well as some Grade 4 students sharing their personal inquiries. To wrap up Mr McBride was able to hand out the birthday bands to students who had recently had any birthdays – I am not sure if Mr McBride or the children were most excited about this.
This week we also started our Workshop Wednesday’s. Ms Nikki had 19 parents attend her maths session at 10 am. How is maths taught differently now? Growing our understanding of the changes in maths learning since we were all at school. This was a very positive workshop and she will be continuing her series of workshops next Wednesday 26th January where she will be sharing Maths games for upskilling and growing confidence at home. How can I help my child at home, and enjoy maths together? We look forward to more parents joining her at 10 am next Wednesday.
On Friday we had our ‘invited conferences’ where teachers could meet new families, offer encouragement to those facing challenges and give praise to those students who are going over and above what is expected. Our home and school relationships are so important and I am sure these meetings were productive.
With the Lunar New Year approaching we do have our whole school assembly taking place on Friday 28th January. It would be great if everyone could dress in traditional lunar new year clothes or red. How to watch and access this will be shared next week as the final touches are taking place now.
